A seated Omani woman wearing a mask
An uncaptioned black and white portrait photograph of a seated Muslim woman, probably Omani, wearing a mask. The mask is roughly 'V' shaped, leaving an appeture for her eyes. The hair on the top of her head, with centre parting, is visible. She also wears a black garment over her part of her head and shoulders, with a long-sleeved tunic beneath. She is wearing trousers or leggings on her legs. Her right leg is crossed over her left leg. Her right foot is bare, with two toe rings visible; she has a sandal on her left foot, with an empty sandal (for the right foot) on the ground next to it. She is seated on a wooden crate or similar cube-shaped object. There is a stone wall behind her and pieces of stone on the bare ground around her feet.
Masks such as the one shown here are often known as 'battoulah' (and by other names) around the Persian Gulf.
