An execution by hanging in Persia [Iran]

A black and white portrait photograph of an execution by hanging in Persia. The foreground is taken up by a crowd of at least fifty people, probably all men. Most of them have their backs to the camera and are looking up at a scaffold but a group of around ten, all in the immediate foreground, are facing the camera. These men are wearing woolen hats covering all their hair (possibly kolah namadi) or turbans. Beyond the crowd is an H-shaped scaffold made of three poles. This is supported by various ropes. The figure of a man can be seen hanging from the scaffold. He wears white or light-coloured trousers and has his hands secured behind his back. There is a pulley immediately above his head from which a rope extends downwards to his head. A building with a row of columns can be seen in the backgound, as well as some trees and hills. Original caption (within the photograph): 'Exeuction in Persia / no 20'.
