Sketch of several trees - unfinished. Annotated

Very detailed tree in the foreground, detailed in thin graphite. The trees behind are softer and less defined, and seem to be very lightly suggested in charcoal. Meanwhile, the trees in the background only have a faint graphite outline.
Annotations directly on the trees in the background: “darkest tree of the pictures”, “bright yellow” , “light-green and nearly solid” “light green” “very light – twigs at end of 2nd trees showing right next to dark tree”
“13th May 1871
Afternoon at 4’ o clock
Sun somewhat behind but a little to the left”
1.Top of the trees are rather the fullest in leaf. Branches of near tree very dark compound of foliage – foliage a light near warm green approaching brown
2.Dark green at base of stem
1.Leaves on the near branches – show light on the stems not dark.
2. Tree is a fair network almost leaflike – the barest tree in the picture, not smudgy like this but crisp and some color and near one only lighter and more flat. Stem bluer than N°1.
3. Tree is fuller and yellower almost if not quite flat branches leaning apparently on this side.
