Studies of the 'Gazelle' yacht, Portsmouth, 1826

No. 4 of 73 (PAI0889 - PAI0961)

Drawing inscribed in the upper left 'Gazelle Yacht/Portsmouth june 15th/1826.'

Schetky exhibited a painting, 'The Gazelle Yacht and shipping off Cowes' at the Royal Academy in 1827, now in the National Maritime Museum’s collection (BHC3355). It seems probable that this drawing and PAI0893 are preparatory studies for this painting.

The cutter ‘Gazelle’ was built for a Mr Williams in 1821 who was a member of The Yacht Club, initially a dining club for gentlemen with a mutual interest in yachting. From 1833 the club became the Royal Yacht Squadron, with an emphasis on yacht racing.
