Patuone sitting with a taiaha in a photographic studio.
A carte de visite of a full length portrait of an elderly Māori man sitting on a chair in a photographic studio holding a taiaha (close-quarter staff weapon) in both hands, with the tinana (body) resting on the studio floor. He is in western clothing with a dark cloak over his shoulders. To his left is a cloth-covered table with a military cap on it. A curtain drape hangs in a curve behind his right shoulder. The caption on the reverse states this is Patuone, who was the son of Tapua, leader and tohunga of Ngati Hao of Hokianga, and the elder brother of Nene. He died on 19 September 1872.
The pencil caption on the reverse of the carte de visite says: 'Pa tu one [Patuone].'
