Captain (1869)
Scale 1:48. A plan showing the profile (to hurricane deck) for the masted turret ironclad HMS Captain (1869), as fitted at Lairds, but with later alterations.
Marked "Alterations and additions shown in red ink" . Drawing carries red (Admiralty) Portsmouth Yard stamp dated 29 July 1870, crossed out with black ink; annotated "See Officer's Letter of this date". 29 July 1870 is the date of the inclining experiment carried out at the yard although this may be coincidental as other drawings carry the amendment date 27 July. Ship capsized and sank 6 September 1870.
See also NPA8113, 8114, 8115, 8116, 8117, 8118, 8119, 8120, 8121, 8122, 8123, 8133, some of which are duplicates (e.g. 8122 and 8123 are both tracings of the 'Plan of Holds').
It is concluded that these are tracings made at Portsmouth Yard from the original Lairds drawings as they are all marked (signed) Lairds Bros 3 Feby 1870, rather than carrying an actual Lairds signature or stamp.
