Reappraisals of British colonisation in Atlantic Canada, 1700-1930 / edited by S. Karly Kehoe and Michael E. Vance.
"Investigates the contested legacies of British colonisation on Canada's Atlantic coast. Engages with the legacy of British colonisation in Atlantic Canada across three sections. Situates the Scottish experience within process of British colonisation, challenging the tendency to omit the Scots from critical explorations of the colonisation process in this region. Exposes the reader to a range of experiences from across the four Atlantic Provinces, which will encourage more exciting new research. Chapters are grouped in three main sections: Dispossession and Settlement; Religion and Identity; Reappraising Memory. This collection offers new perspectives on the legacy of British colonisation by concentrating on Atlantic Canada (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island), a region that was pivotal to safeguarding Britain's imperial ambitions, between 1750 and 1930. New and established researchers from Canada, Scotland and the United States engage with the core themes of migration, dispossession, religion, identity, and commemoration in a way that diverges markedly from existing scholarship. The research shines much-needed light on groups traditionally excluded from Britain's broader imperial narrative, highlighting the indigenous experience and the presence and agency of slaves, free people of colour and religious minorities"--Provided by the publisher.

The making of King James II: the formative years of a fallen king
James II reigned from 1685, following the death of his brother Charles II, until 1688, when he was deposed in the Glorious Revolution. He was the last Roman Catholic monarch of England. He was a loyal and valuable lieutenant to Charles II. Before becoming king he held many important positions and exercised a great deal of power and patronage. However, on ascending to the throne he failed to harness political support and did not present an acceptable public image to his subjects. James II's obstinate and authoritarian behaviour lead to him being regarded as 'an impolitick prince'. Previously it has been suggested that his personality when king was the result of physical or mental degeneration. This book is the result of detailed research into James II's life before he became king and concludes that the flaws in his personality and behaviour were present from the start. The book has a small selection of black and white illustrations, mainly portraits of James II. There are extensive notes, a bibliography and an index.

German battleships, 1914-18. Gary Staff.
"This volume covers the history of the Deutschland to Osfriesland classes of German battlecruisers, beginning with the last of the pre-dreadnought battleships and explaining the revolutionary developments, particularly the vast increases in size and armament, that took place within the German Imperial Navy as it readied itself for war. Gary Staff describes the design and technology of these classes, focusing on the development and combat experiences of individual ships. Supported by official documents, first-hand accounts and drawings, this book also contains specially commissioned artwork depicting the battleship Pommern fighting at Jutland and ships of the Osfriesland class destroying HMS Black Prince in a dramatic night-time engagement."--from Amazon.

British battlecruisers, 1939-45 / Angus Konstam.
When war broke out in 1939 only three true battlecruisers remained in the Royal Navy, including HMS Hood, the world's largest and fastest capital ship for much of her life. Of the remaining two battlecruisers (Repulse and Renown) one was sunk by Japanese aircraft off Singapore, while the other served with distinction until the end of the war. This book traces the pre-war development of these spectacular warships.

The greater gulf : essays on the environmental history of the Gulf of St. Lawrence /edited by Claire E. Campbell, Edward MacDonald, and Brian Payne.
"The largest estuary in the world, the Gulf of St Lawrence is defined broadly by an ecology that stretches from the upper reaches of the St Lawrence River to the Gulf Stream, and by a web of influences that reach from the heart of the continent to northern Europe. For more than a millennium, the gulf's strategic location and rich marine resources have made it a destination and a gateway, a cockpit and a crossroads, and a highway and a home. From Vinland the Good to the novels of Lucy Maud Montgomery, the Gulf has haunted the Western imagination. A transborder collaboration between Canadian and American scholars, The Greater Gulf represents the first concerted exploration of the environmental history--marine and terrestrial--of the Gulf of St Lawrence. Contributors tell many histories of a place that has been fished, fought over, explored, and exploited. The essays' defining themes resonate in today's charged atmosphere of quickening climate change as they recount stories of resilience played against ecological fragility, resistance at odds with accommodation, considered versus reckless exploitation, and real, imagined, and imposed identities. Reconsidering perceptions about borders and the spaces between and across land and sea, The Greater Gulf draws attention to a central place and part of North Atlantic and North American history."--

William IV : a king at sea /Roger Knight.
Part of the 'Penguin Monarchs' series, the author gives a concise and perceptive biography of William IV, the 'Sailor King'. Beginning with his childhood, it covers his years with the navy, his long relationship with the actress Mrs Jordan and his marriage to Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen. Inheriting the throne at a time of strikes, riots and the push for parliamentary reform, the author shows William as a better king than sailor, leaving the monarchy in a healthier state for the smooth succession of his niece, Victoria. A genealogical table is included, along with colour images of paintings and caricatures of the time.

The black ship : the quest to recover an English pirate ship and its lost treasure
"Captain 'Black Sam' Bellamy and his band of pirates terrorised the high seas, looting gold from more than fifty ships and loading it onto the Whydah, a captured slave ship, before losing one last furious battle with the elements and sinking off the coast of Cape Cod in the Great Storm of 1717. Two centuries later, spellbound by his uncle's tales of Bellamy, the English-sailor-turned-pirate-adventurer, and his flagship the Whydah - 'the Black Ship' - underwater explorer Barry Clifford resolved to salvage the sunken wreck and its plunder. He has spent more than fifteen years chasing leads and heading a full-time search for the wreck site. His efforts have paid off: Clifford and his team of divers have recovered the wreck and much of its priceless treasure - canons, pistols, coinage and gold - some of which dates back to 1684. The Black Ship tells how Barry Clifford correctly estimated the position of the eighteenth-century wreckage and over the years discovered over one hundred thousand artifacts of real historical value. This is a book of adventure, history and marine archaeology, and a dramatic quest that unfolds within the context of the 'Golden Age' of piracy and the legend of a pirate 'prince' from south-west England."--Provided by the publisher.

The world's greatest battleships : an illustrated history /David Ross.
"The world's greatest battleships features 52 of the greatest warships to have sailed and fought over the last five centuries. Beginning with English king Henry VIII's flagship, Henry Grace áa Dieu, the book covers all the main periods of battleship development, including the great sail ships, such as Sovereign of the Seas, Santisima Trinidad, and Victory. The advent of steam-driven warships provide the core of the book, beginning with the introduction of Gloire in 1859 and continuing through all the major pre-Dreadnoughts, such as Inflexible, Mikasa, Indiana, and Tsessarevitch. The author continues with detailed coverage of the great battleships of the two world wars, including Derfflinger, Nagato, Hood, Scharnhorst, Vittorio Veneto, Yamato, and Iowa. The book closes with the last new battleship to be commissioned, Vanguard, in 1946. Included are some of the world's greatest and most powerful capital ships. Many had eventful careers and participated in famous actions - such as the Prince of Wales's and Hood's pursuit of the German raider Bismarck; others, such as the Tirpitz, are remembered as a lurking threat; yet some, such as the USS Maine, are only remembered for being sunk in mysterious circumstances."--Dust jacket.

Pathfinders : the golden age of Arabic science /Jim Al-Khalili.
"In Pathfinders: The Golden Age of Arabic Science, Jim al-Khalili celebrates the forgotten pioneers who helped shape our understanding of the world. For over 700 years the international language of science was Arabic. Surveying the golden age of Arabic science, Jim Al-Khalili reintroduces such figures as the Iraqi physicist Ibn al-Haytham, who practised the modern scientific method over half a century before Bacon; al-Khwarizmi, the greatest mathematician of the medieval world; and Abu Rayhan al-Biruni, a Persian polymath to rival Leonardo da Vinci."--Provided by the publisher.

Warships from the golden age of steam : an illustrated guide to great warships from 1860 to 1945 /David Ross
"The great era of the steam warship was from the mid-1860s to the mid-1940s - an 80-year period in which a huge variety of large ships was built, ever-greater in size, fire-power, and technical sophistication. Capital ships were the most expensive and destructive weaponry prior to the atomic bomb, and their development can be traced decade by decade. Arranged in chronological order, Warships from the Golden Age of Steam provides concise coverage of the most famous warships of the period, including HMS Devastation, the first seagoing turreted ship; the Chinese Ting Yuen, sunk at the Battle of Wei-Hai-Wei in 1894; Mikasa and Retvizan, which fought each other at the Battle of the Yellow Sea in 1904; HMS Indomitable, Nassau, and HMS Lion, which all fought at the Battle of Jutland in 1916; HMS Prince of Wales, which took part in the hunt for the Bismarck, and was eventually sunk by Japanese air attack off the coast of Malaya in December 1941; and the Tirpitz, which remained a constant threat to Allied shipping in the North Atlantic until it was sunk by aerial bombers in a Norwegian fjord in late 1944. Filled with colourful artworks, expertly-written background text, and useful specifications of 100 warships, Warships from the Golden Age of Steam is a visually lavish guide to major fighting ships from 1860 to 1945."--Provided by the publisher.

Adams of Fleet Street, instrument makers to King George III
" 'G. Adams in Fleet Street London' is the signature on some of the finest scientific instruments of the eighteenth century. This book is the first comprehensive study of the instrument-making business run by the Adams family, from its foundation in 1734 to bankruptcy in 1817. It is based on detailed research in the archival sources as well as examination of extant instruments and publications by George Adams Senior and his two sons, George Junior and Dudley. Separate chapters are devoted to George Senior's family background, his royal connections, and his new globes; George Junior's numerous publications, and his dealings with van Marum; and to Dudley's dabbling with 'medico-electrical therapeutics'. The book is richly illustrated with plates from the Adams' own publications and with examples of instruments ranging from unique museum pieces - such as the 'Prince of Wales' microscope - and globes to the more common, even mundane items of the kind seen in salesrooms and with dealers - the surveying, navigational and military instruments that formed the backbone of the business. The appendices include facsimiles of trade catalogues and an annotated short-title listing of the Adams family's publications, which also covers American and Continental editions, as well as the posthumous ones by W. & S. Jones."--Provided by the publisher.
