Captain Cook's cottage

A view of the front of 'Captain Cook's Cottage' in the Fitzroy Gardens, Melbourne. Tall trees surround the back of the cottage. A group of adults and children stand by the railings to the left of the image. The cottage was built in 1755 in Yorkshire, and lived in by Captain Cook's parents. It was sold in 1933 for £800 to Sir Russell Grimwade who had it shipped to Melbourne and reconstructed in time for the State's celebrations in October 1934.

HMS Sussex with the Duke of Gloucester on board arrived at Melbourne on 18 October 1934 to celebrate the centenary of the State of Victoria. He departed on the Sussex on 12 November, arriving in Hobart, Tasmania on 14 November 1934.
