HMS Sussex's Royal Marine and Maori tug-of-war teams

An informal group photograph of the tug-of-war teams made up of Royal Marines from the cruiser HMS Sussex (1928) and Maori standing, facing the camera, with Korororaka Bay in the background. Lieutenant W. J. K. Shaxby and the Royal Marine Colour Seargent are kneeling at the centre of the group with an unidentified officer in civilian clothes and a Maori man kneeling to the right.

The print is captioned: 'Lt. Shaxby with R.M. + Maori Tug of War Team Russell'.

HMS Sussex arrived at Russell, New Zealand, on 6 March 1935 and departed on 12 March 1935 for Auckland.
