Royal Tour of Duke of Gloucester on HMS Sussex, 1934-1935

A black cloth covered album titled ' "HMS Sussex", "Royal Tour" September - November 1934, Et Seq.', relating to the voyage to Australia with the Duke of Gloucester, and the subsequent cruises of the Sussex between Australia and New Zealand, 1934-1935. It contains 277 photographic plates, many with captions, and three loose photographic prints.

The main themes illustrated in the album are:

1) Topographical views of the ports and islands visited on the voyage out, including Gibraltar, Marseilles, Ceylon [Sri Lanka]; the tour in Australia: Adelaide, Melbourne, Fremantle, Sydney, Tasmania; and the later cruise to Darwin, the Lord Howe Islands, Fiji Islands, Whitsunday Islands, New Zealand (Rotorua, Dunedin), and Dunk Island.
2) Life onboard the Sussex outward bound to Australia including, clay pigeon shooting, tennis swimming in the Mediterranean, Crossing the Line ceremony, HRH Duke inspecting the divisions.
3) A sequence of the Sussex firing torpedoes at Jervis Bay, 1935, including the sinking of the decommissioned Mallow by torpedo.
4) A series throughout the latter part of the album of a naval brigade on railway trucks with guns and artillery pieces [location/date unknown]
5) Some photographs of the officers and crew onboard relaxing or at work.
