Rough sketch of Castor 1832, 5th rate. Annotated
Stored with PAH4443-PAH4521. Inscription above: “Will Mr Hollis be so good as to do the needful with these (Pique & Castor) for me – as before in case of Arrogant etc.: your obliged R S Thomas”. Below is inscribed “Castor”; and dimensions are marked on the drawing and listed on the right of the page. E. Benezit (“Dictionaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs”, 1951) lists two engravers called Hollis, George and Thomas, who died in 1842 and 1843 respectively. There is an undated drawing of the Arrogant (X1331) in the same album as this drawing of the Castor and, also in the NMM collection, there is a lithograph by Thomas Picken after R.S. Thomas which seems to follow these drawing, but these pictures are of the Arrogant launched in 1848 which began building at Portsmouth in 1845, thus neither of these two engravers can be the “Mr Hollis” referred to in the inscription.
