'Cape Frio [Brazil] N by W 1/2 W distant 4 leagues. Lighthouse on highest point'

No. 2 in Fanshawe's Pacific album, 1849 - 52. Captioned by the artist on the album page below the image, as title. This atmospheric study, entirely in tones of blue, was done while Fanshawe was heading for Valparaiso, Chile, via Cape Horn early in 1849, in command of the 18-gun 'Daphne'. Cape Frio, by this time with the lighthouse shown, is on the coast of Brazil, west and a little north of the harbour of Rio de Janeiro for which it was formerly the prominent landfall - though today entirely within the city limits. 'Daphne' was in Rio by 27 January so this drawing was done within the previous two days at most.

Fanshawe's panoramic fold-out view of Rio itself is PAI4607.
