'Panama, March 1850'

No. 36 in Fanshawe's Pacific album, 1849 - 52. Fold-out panoramic drawing on two joined sheets, the right one stuck down to the album page which is captioned by the artist below the image, as title. A view from seaward of Panama, then a small town on the Pacific coast of the Isthmus of Panama, with the distinctive white Cathedral in the centre and ships at anchor in the bay to the right. Drawn around or after 7 March, when Fanshawe's 'Daphne' arrived at Taboga island, in the bay of Panama. He preserved four views of Panama, all made in March 1850: the others are PAI4641, PAI4644 and PAI4646.
