'Between San Felipe de Aconcagua and Quillota, Chile, Jany 16th 1851'

No. 52 in Fanshawe's Pacific album, 1849 - 52. Captioned by the artist on the album page below the image, as title. This is the last of seven drawings (PAI4653-PAI4659) which record Fanshawe's inland excursion to see the Andes, while his ship 'Daphne' was at Valparaiso over the winter of 1850-51. For the general circumstances see PAI4563. Fanshawe and his companion, Young, spent the 15th January at San Felipe - which is on the north bank of the Aconcagua River and which he found a 'dull town'. With a long ride westward ahead, they left at 3 a.m on the 16th for Quillota, where they passed the night before completing the final 40-mile leg of their return to Valparaiso on the 17th. This view presumably looks west down the course of the Aconcagua at some point on the way.
