'Furuye, Hirado' [Japan]

No. 24 of 51 (PAJ2051 - PAJ2101): inscribed by the artist on the album page, as title, with the date '8/68'. Furuye lies on longitude 129. 31 east of Greenwich, on the west side of the large gulf called Yebukoro Wan (Furuye Bay) in the north of the Japanese island of Hirado: it is almost due west of Hirado City across an intervening mountain ridge. This view is may be from a small bay just north of Furuye itself, though hard to reconcile with the Admiralty chart. The ship at anchor in the left distance is presumably Butt's (HMS 'Sylvia'). It may alternatively be a view north out of Yebukuro Wan, but if so the length and size of the gulf is greatly contracted.
