View of rocks and islets off Sotome (Nagasaki), Japan

No. 25 of 51 (PAJ2051 - PAJ2101): inscribed by the artist on the album page, 'On the west coast of Japan', with the date '8/68'. Japanese inshore fishing boats, shown against a background of distinctive and picturesque rocks. These are, from left to right, the islets of Ko-zumo, Oh-zumo - which is a natural rock arch -, Hako-jima and Ike-jima, as seen looking westward from the coast of what is today the Sotome district of the city of Nagasaki. The principal boat appears to have women and perhaps children sitting amidships. (The Museum is grateful to colleagues in the Museum of Maritime Science, Tokyo, for helping identify the location shown in this drawing.)
