At Simoda [Shimoda], south coast of Japan

No. 41 of 51 (PAJ2051 - PAJ2101): inscribed by the artist on the album page 'At Simoda - Japan. S. Coast. 2/70'. Shimoda, now Shimoda City, is a coastal town on the eastern side of the peninsula which forms the western limit of the Sagami-nada Sea, south of Yokohama and Tokyo. Butt's view looks down from a hillside onto a scene of flat cultivation, though bare given this is a winter scene. The house or farm on the left also has a flat garden terrace levelled up by a retaining wall. Other houses lie beyond the fields below, beneath a distinctive and forested conical hill.
