Suao Bay, on the east coast of Formosa [Taiwan]

No. 35 of 51 (PAJ2051 - PAJ2101): inscribed by the artist on the album page 'Sau-O Bay, Formosa, E. Coast' and dated '/69'. The bay shown - which is now a modern port facility - lies between two promontories near the north end of the east coast of Taiwan. Suao itself is today a small town just inland and south of the large conurbation that includes Ludong Township and Yilan City. This view is from the south side with Butt's ship 'Sylvia' in the distance and the sea to the right. The figures in the foreground are companions from the ship, though two appear to be wearing local straw hats.
