'Near By Town' [Ottawa, Canada]

Mounted with ZBA4891 and ZBA4892 on page 21 of Fanshawe's West Indies, North American and Borneo scrapbook (ZBA4855).

Lithograph depicting a view near By Town of a bluff over a river, with a few buildings. By Town is now Ottawa, the capital city of Canada. Sited where the Rideau Canal meets the Ottawa River, it took its name from John By, the colonel of British engineers who was instrumental in constructing the canal. It was founded in 1827, incorporated in 1850 and was renamed Ottawa when incorporated as a city in 1855. See summary of Fanshawe's known American movements with ZBA4856: he took his flagship 'Royal Alfred' to Quebec one summer while C-in-C North America and West Indies, and toured the area (including a visit to Ottawa), but the exact date remains to be clarified. It is curious this image is still titled By Town, since the name had changed well before. [PvdM 2/11]
