'Borneo. Looking up the River from our house' [Brunei, Borneo]

Inscribed by the artist, as title and mounted with ZBA4896 on page 23 (recto) in Fanshawe's West Indies, North American and Borneo scrapbook (ZBA4855). Fanshawe stayed about four days in the house mentioned in the town of Borneo, at the dates shown, on the river of the same name: see ZBA4896 for details. It is the pole-built dwellings against jungle on the far side of the river that largely dominate in this view save on the right, where the neighbouring houses to Fanshawe's on his side are seen with some form of local sampan moored off.
