'Looking up the Borneo River from Chermin Island' [Brunei, Borneo]
Inscribed bottom centre in ink by the artist, as title, this view up the Borneo River from Chermin Island is mounted on page 24 (recto) of Fanshawe's West Indies, North American and Borneo scrapbook (ZBA4855). It shows a view from high ground on the island with what my be the remains of a pole-built structure on the left. It was probably done on or about 27 August 1845 when Fanshawe's ship 'Cruizer' was anchored inside Moarra Point at the entrance to the Borneo River in what is now Brunei: 'At half-past 5 A.M we set off [for Brunè/ Borneo town] in the Pinnace. [Rajah James] Brooke, [Captain] Bethune, Hinde, Wiliamson [Brooke's assistant and translator] and myself were the party ... we halted at Cherimon [sic], a pretty little island at the mouth of the Borneo River, and owing to contrary tides we did not reach Brunè till 2 o'clock, P.M....' (Fanshawe [1904] p. 127). [PvdM 2/11]
