Promotions and commissions, 1852-1885.

Certificates issued by the Commissioners for executing the office of Lord High Admiral, together with other appointments:

(1) Certificate appointing Dobbie as commander of the wooden paddle sloop HMS BUZZARD (1849), dated 7 May 1852.
(2) Telegraphic dispatch received at the Royal Naval College, Portsmouth, asking Dobbie to be informed of his appointment to command the BUZZARD, dated 7 May 1852. The reverse has a note made by Dobbie's mother, explaining how the message was received at breakfast on the following day at 69 Rupert Square.
(3) Certificate appointing Dobbie to command the receiving ship HMS VICTORIOUS (1808) at Portsmouth, dated 11 March 1857.
(4) Certificate promoting Dobbie to the rank of retired rear-admiral in Her Majesty’s Fleet, dated 7 January 1875.
(5) Letter from the Admiralty addressed to Dobbie at 4 Bicton Terrace, Exmouth, promoting him to vice-admiral on the retired list from 15 June 1879, signed by Rear-Admiral Robert Hall, Naval Secretary.
(6) Letter from the Admiralty addressed to Dobbie at 4 Bicton Terrace, Exmouth, promoting him to admiral on the retired list from 31 March 1885, signed by Evan Macgregor, Naval Secretary.
