Ernest William Hedges was born in 1908. He served on the MATAROA, 1927-1928; HOBSON'S BAY, 1928; the HIGHLAND WARRIOR, 1928-1929; M.V. RANGITIKI, 1929; AUSONIA, 1929 and the RANGITATA, 1929. He served as an assistant steward 1923-1929, starting as a stewards boy on the HIGHLAND LADDIE on 4 October 1923. Bertram Charles Hedges was an engineer and mechanic on Cunard Line ships the TONGARIRO, PORT CAMPBELL and PORT CAROLINE, 1933-1936. The personal letters from Ernest William Hedges to his wife Louise are numerous and reveal much interest concerning life in passenger liners during the 1930's.
