Between 1871 and 1872, the period the letterbook covers, Carpenter captained HMS BRISTOL and HMS ARIADNE.

Administrative / biographical background
Carpenter was the son of Henry John Chetwynd, 18th Earl of Shrewsbury. He was promoted to Rear-Admiral in 1882 and commissioned to command HMS REVENGE in 1887; and promoted again a year later as Vice-Admiral in the same ship. He became Admiral in 1894.
