Letterbooks and orderbook of HRH Prince William Henry while Captain of HMS PEGASUS 1786, HMS Andromeda 1788 and as Rear Admiral, commanded HMS Valiant.

Letter and order book of HRH Prince William Henry containing copies of orders and letters received and of orders and letters delivered (in the back) while Captain of HMS PEGASUS 1786, HMS Andromeda 1788 and as Rear Admiral, commanded HMS Valiant. This Letterbook dates from 18 March 1786 to 2 April 1788. An important and interesting record of the service of the future King off the coast of Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and in the Saint Lawrence as well as on the West Indian Station. In the West Indies he was under the orders of Nelson, and the volume contains copies of the official correspondence between them; some of this relates to the Prince's differences with his first Lieutenant Issac Schomberg. Nelson thought highly of the capabilities of the Prince as a naval officer and a friendship sprang up between them which lasted through life.
