Letterbook (contemporary copies) kept by Admiral Sir Charles Ogle (1775-1858).

Ogle was commander-in-chief, Portsmouth from 1845.

Administrative / biographical background
He was appointed acting commander of the ASSURANCE in 1794. Later he commanded PETEREL, MINERVA, MELEAGER and others including UNITE and MALTA. He became Commander-in-Chief, North American Station in 1827.
