Northern Regions, Vol II: Comprising of Norway: Sweden: Spitsbergen: Russia.
'Northern Regions, Vol. II: Norway: Sweden: Spitsbergen: Russia'. These areas noted on title page, illustrated with an ermine.
Itinerary begins at the mouth of the Baltic near Lund, covers much of southern Sweden and its lakes, then roughly follows the Baltic coastline as far as St Petersberg. The tour then returns to 'the Sound' [Øresund], roughly following the coast to northern Norway, and covering 'Spitzbergen' and the Svalbard archipelago. This volume ends again in Russia, beginning with the coasts of the White Sea, and moving inland (via Moscow) as far as Nizhny Novgorod.
Opens with a taxonomic list of the region's animal life, beginning with 'Homo Sapiens', pp. i–xxxii.
Some material overlaps with the contents of Pennant's 'Arctic Zoology' (1784, 2nd ed. 1792), but much is apparently original.
'Mr Samuel Oedman' of 'Warmdoa' [Värmdö], i.e. Samuel Ödmann (1750–1829), thanked for information on various topics related to Sweden, e.g. pp. 163, 165. Also directly cited are 'Professor [Anders Jahan] Retzius' of Lund (p. 181); 'Mr William Ferguson an able pilot' on the North Sea (p. 222); 'Mr Ascanius professor of mineralogy at Drontheim' (p. 226).
Statistics relating to Swedish population and consumption of livestock c.1793, and annual naturalist's observations (e.g. dates of thaws and returned birds) from 1774–1780 inserted pp. 166–167.
Includes three prints of the 1773 Phipps Expedition towards the North Pole with the ships Racehorse and Carcass, by John Cleveley (1774), pp. 264–265.
Full itinerary and index, covering P/16/1 and P/16/2, in rear of volume.
