Spain and Portugal.

Full title: 'Spain Portugal and Southern France: [Part] I Spain and Portugal'. Elaborate title page incorporating plants and antiquarian coins, dated 1791.

Itinerary roughly follows the coasts of Spain and Portugal from the river 'Bidasao [Bidasoa]' on the French/Spanish border round to Gibraltar.

Some reference to David Pennant's travels in Spain, e.g. p. 52. David toured France and Spain in 1787–88, collecting information on 'naval strength and commercial advantages and disadvantages' for his father. See 'Literary Life' (1793), p. 31. Information also gathered from correspondence with 'M. [Ignatius] d. Asso' (p. 49) and 'M. [Gerard] de Visme' of 'Bemfique [Bemfica]' (see insert in rear of volume).

Two watercolours entitled 'May 24 1775. The Burlins [Burlings/Berlengas]...' (pp.116– 117), and 'Cape St. Vincent...25 May 1775' (pp. 176–177). Both include approximate distances and bearings, and a ship flying the British Red Ensign. Artist unknown.

'View of the Coast of Barbary...taken from Europa Point....Gibraltar', inserted between pp. 244-245.

Full itinerary and index in rear of volume.

Manuscript notes on Portugal inserted after index.
