Studio photograph of two South Asian women with a hookah and other objects

A black and white studio portrait photograph of two South Asian women. One woman is standing to the right of and slightly behind a chair on which the other is seated. The standing women, who wears a sari-like dress, has her left hand placed across her midriff and her right hand held above the head of the other woman. She wears earrings, rings on her fingers, bangles and a toe ring. The other woman, whose face is slightly blurred, is seated on the chair with her feet on a small pouf or round cushion. Her hair is loose and hangs down to her waist. A hinged object rests on her lap which she holds with her right hand. Both women are barefoot but two pairs of slippers or slipper-like shoes on the floor. Also on the floor, to the left of the image, is an object that is probably lit hookah. The scene, almost certainly arranged in a commercial photography studio, takes place against a blank wall with some sort of skirting at the base. The two figures and various objects stand on a mat or carpet. Original caption: ‘Hindoo [Hindu] girls’.
