A Chinese family sat round a table
A square, black and white photograph showing five Chinese people at table in a room. Four adults (two women and two men) are seated around a dining table, whilst a boy, either servant or a member of the family, stands at the left edge of the table with his right hand around a pouring jug, possibly of tea. The two people seated at the furthest side of the table from the camera are looking directly at it, whereas the other three people are seen from the side. The boy has plaited queue (pigtail), as does the man seated nearest the camera. All are wearing loose upper garments and the two men with visible legs are wearing knee-length, loose-fitting, light-coloured trousers. Both the table and the backless stools the diners are sitting on are made of wood; the table comes up to their chest in height and contains sundry pots and plates on its bare surface. Behind the table are three panels of a wooden screen which lets light through latticed windows at the top. Natural light can also be seen to the right of the screen. There are also for the four lamps hanging high over the table to be lit, some glass globes and one with hanging tassles. Original caption (handwritten beneath): ‘Chinese Family at dinner’.
