Correspondence from the year 1816 regarding Attorney-General v. Lindegren.

Correspondence between Lindegren and Kaye & Freshfield (largely Joseph Kaye), among others, during 1816. In February, Kaye writes to Lindegren to say that if he will not pay a sum by way of compromise (to cover allowances received from Thorley Morrison & Co.), they must proceed without delay to examine witnesses. Later that same month, K&F explain to Lindegren that his offer of £3000 to put an end to the suit will almost certainly be rejected by his opponents, and that twice that sum may not even be accepted. K&F write to Sir Andrew Snape Hamond asking him to give evidence on the part of Lindegren, as he was Comptroller of the Navy during the period 1795 to 1799, when the alleged offences occurred. Hamond replies that this period of time will be extremely difficult to recollect, and that he has already in 1805 given a very full testimony before the Commission of Naval Enquiry on Lindegren's case, as set forth in their 12th Report, but he reluctantly complies with their request to give further evidence. Knight & Jones express intent to cross-examine Hamond. In April, Kaye has heard from Ellis that Lindegren intends to offer £5000 to end the suit. They formally present the Government with this offer in May 1816, stressing that Lindegren's family is worried that he will die before the suit comes to a conclusion. Meanwhile, a Mrs Hayward, wife of Francis Hayward, a witness to be examined on the part of the Admiralty, has written to Lindegren asking for her husband to be paid to "stay out of the way". K&F explain to Lindegren that this is illegal and he could use it in his defence. Knight & Jones write in October to say the offer of £5000 has been rejected and that the examination of Hamond will go ahead. Lindegren writes to Ellis expressing deep concern about the prospect of Hayward giving evidence against him. Hayward's examination is completed and deposition signed on the 31st December.
