Correspondence from the year 1819 regarding Attorney-General v. Lindegren.
Correspondence between Lindegren and Kaye & Freshfield, among others, during 1819. On 11 January, K&F write to Lindegren to inform him that the Chief Baron will give judgement on his case next Thursday, and that the court will sit in Grays Inn Hall. Lindegren replies saying his son John will be in town to receive it. K&F propose terms for compromising the suit so that Lindegren and his family do not have to pay such considerable sums after enduring 10 years of anxiety for this case. Knight & Jones warn that if they made an offer now it is unlikely to be accepted - but if Lindegren were to renew his previous offer of £5000 it may be accepted. K&F reply stressing that Lindegren should only need to pay what he is liable for, which they say is £3000, considering the great trouble and expenses he sustained for such a long period of time, to the detriment of his other business. Knight & Jones send K&F two accounts drawn up by Hayward which prove, they claim, that Lindegren owes considerably more to their client. Lindegren's son John writes to K&F to say how ridiculous this is, and that he will investigate these "erroneous accounts". K&F turn the results of his and their own investigations to Knight & Jones, which show how Hayward's accounts are grossly exaggerated. Knight & Jones reply with quotations from original evidence, and from evidence given by other witnesses which suggest the opposite. Lindegren offers a final compromise of £4000, and Knight & Jones are directed by the Admiralty to accept it on their client's part. By December, the decree has been made for the payment.
