Sir Cosmo Duff-Gordon (1862-1931) was a landowner and Olympic silver medalist (for fencing) who was one of only twelve people who escaped the sinking of the TITANIC in Lifeboat 1, accompaned by his wife and her secretary. He was called as a witness at the subsequent British Inquiry and received much press criticism for his actions that night.
