Administrative / biographical background
The Irish rebellion led by Earl Desmond ended in 1583. Queen Elizabeth confiscated his estates in Munster and distributed them among English notables including Sir Walter Ralegh, Sir Christopher Hatton and Sir Richard Grenville, who undertook to repopulate them with English families. The landholdings of Raleigh and Hatton are shown either side of the Blackwater, inland from Youghal.
