Administrative / biographical background
Sir William Drury went to Ireland in 1574 to suppress the Irish rebellion under the Earl of Desmond. As President of Munster, he granted land to Arthur Carter, Lieutenant to the Marshall of Munster. Carter was murdered in his bed by John Desmond in 1579, shortly before the battle of Smerwick. Disputes about boundaries of plantation land were settled in the late 1580s.
