Administrative / biographical background
During the Desmond rebellion, in 1579 the Irish obtained Pope Gregory's approval for a Catholic crusade against Queen Elizabeth. An Italian and Spanish force landed at Smerwick harbour. They surrendered when besieged by the English in November 1580 but the Lord Deputy, unable to manage 600 prisoners, ordered their massacre.
