In William J. J. Spry's account of the voyage he describes the time the King was photographed: '...for this occasion their Majesties were got up in regal attire: George I., in naval uniform coat, with four gold lace stripes surmounted with a crown, and lace trousers; while Queen Charlotte was attired in a light muslin costume of European make.'
HMS Challenger (1858) visited Tonga/Tongatabu between 19 and 22 July 1874 during its scientific circumnavigation of the globe.
