A half-length photograph of a Kai Colo warrior, Fiji

A half-length portrait photograph of a Kai Colo warrior from the interior of Viti Levu, Fiji. During the period of Challenger's visit the white settlers and Fijian Cakobau government were in conflict with the Kai Colo, who still lived in a traditional style in the more mountainous region of the island.

It is likely that this is not a photograph from the expedition, as it is in a photographic studio, indicated by the painted backdrop scenery.

The print has a caption stating: 'Kaicolo or Devil Man'

HMS Challenger (1858) visited Ngaloa and Levuka between 25 July and 1 August 1874 during its scientific circumnavigation of the globe.
