A general view of the settlement at Levuka, Fiji.
A general view from the shore looking north towards the settlement at Levuka on Ovalau, Fiji. The Albion Hotel is in the centre of the photograph. A few buildings to its left is a store with the sign 'Alex'r E. Doig' above it. According to the 1874 Fiji Directory, The Albion Hotel keepers were Thorpe and McDougall, and Alexander E. Doig was a merchant. The store owned by Michael Horwitz (sign says M. H Horw...) is just visible in the distance to the right of Doig's store.
In the foreground on the left is a canvas hut, used as a dark room, with an open box of glass negatives on a rock next to it. Behind this is a small wooden hut, possibly a privy, with steps leading up to a wooden three-pitched roof building. Three Fijian men are sitting on rocks on the beach in the foreground to the right of the image.
The print, which has been cut into two sections across two pages, has a caption stating: 'Levuka, Fiji'
HMS Challenger (1858) visited Ngaloa and Levuka between 25 July and 1 August 1874 during its scientific circumnavigation of the globe.
