The Pink Terrace, Lake Rotomahana, New Zealand
A view from Lake Rotamahana towards the Pink Terrace (Te Otukapuarangi) formed by natural geothermal springs depositing silica-saturated water on the shore. An unidentified man is standing on the lower tier of the terrace by the shoreline, and nearby is a Maori man, paddle in hand, in a long canoe on the lake. The Pink Terrace was on the western shore of the lake. It, and the White Terrace, were destroyed in 1886 when Mount Tarawera erupted.
D. L. Mundy toured New Zealand photographing the landscape in 1869 and subsequently sold and published prints.
HMS Challenger (1858) visited Wellington, New Zealand between 28 June and 7 July 1874 during its scientific circumnavigation of the globe, although this photograph was taken by another photographer in New Zealand in 1869.
