A portrait of a Fijian man in metal cuffs

A photograph of a shirtless Fijian man sitting on a chair with his arms resting palm-up on his knees. His wrists are bound by metal cuffs. He is wearing a close-fitting necklace of spikes (unknown what they are) and a fibre skirt called a liku. It is likely that this is not a photograph from the expedition, as it is in a photographic studio, indicated by the painted backdrop scenery.

The Burns family were settlers on Viti Levu, Fiji and were killed in 1873 during a Kai Colo raid on the Ba River area.

The print has a caption stating: 'Goneva. Murderer of Burns'.

HMS Challenger (1858) visited Ngaloa and Levuka between 25 July and 1 August 1874 during its scientific circumnavigation of the globe.
