A group photograph of four Tongan men and one woman on board HMS Challenger (1858)

An oval group photograph of a Tongan woman dressed in a tupenu (cloth wrap skirt) standing next to a Tongan man who is also wearing a tupenu but with a dark six-button thick jacket. His left hand is resting on his hip. In front of them are three Tongan men in tupenu sitting crossed-legged on the upper deck of HMS Challenger (1858). A small white clay pipe is on the deck in front of the middle seated man.

HMS Challenger (1858) visited Tonga/Tongatabu between 19 and 22 July 1874 during its scientific circumnavigation of the globe.
