A large tabular iceberg in the South Atlantic

An oval-cut photograph of a tabular iceberg in the South Atlantic taken from the exploration ship HMS Challenger (1858).

HMS Challenger left Cape of Good Hope on 17 December 1873 for passage to Melbourne, arriving on 17 March 1874. During this time the ship visited Kerguelen Island and explored the South Atlantic. According to William J. J. Spry's account they encountered their first iceberg on 11 February and their last on 4 March 1874 (pp.134-145).
