The photograph is captioned 'Natives. Tongatabu. Prince Wellington central figure.'

Dr R. W. Coppinger records being at Tongatapu, Friendly Islands, between 8 and 18 November 1880. He described Prince Wellington as 'most civil and obliging. He is a remarkably fine-looking man, being six feet two inches in height, and stout in proportion; his face beams with amiability and intelligence;...' [page 172]
