A general view of a Fijian village, possibly Buréta, on the west side of Ovalau, Fiji
A view of part of a Fijian village, possibly Buréta on the west side of Ovalau Island, Fiji, taken from above the river. Two young women are sitting on a rock in the shallow river looking towards the camera, while two other women are sitting on the river bank further back. Thatched 'bure' [houses] are scattered among the palm trees either side of the river. The background is dominated by high hills covered in vegetation and trees.
The photograph is captioned 'Fijian Village. Levuka'.
Dr Coppinger records his expedition into the island: 'Starting from Levuka on the morning of the 30th of September, we proceeded up the Totoonga Valley, which stretches inland from the back of the settlement [...] we continued our walk down this valley, following the course of the river, which, as we advanced, rapidly increased in size, and pursued so sinuous a course that we were obliged to cross and recross it five or six times before we arrived at Buréta—a native village on the west side of Ovalau—which we gained just before nightfall.' [pages 165-6]. The photograph was reproduced as an etching in Coppinger's book, page 167 with the caption 'Tatoonga Valley, Ovalau, Fiji'.
