A group of indigenous Torres Strait Islanders in their encampment, Torres Straits

A photograph of a group of indigenous Torres Strait Islanders, consisting of men, women and children, sitting on the sand with their encampment behind. The shelters are made from thin curved branches covered with woven matting, bark and cloth. The camp has been built just outside the tree-line.

The photograph is captioned: 'Natives and Encampment. Torres Strait Islanders.'

Dr Coppinger records arriving off Somerset and Albany Island in early June and remained in the Torres Strait area for four months. They left on 1 October for Port Darwin, arriving on 20 October 1881.
