A view of part of the settlement of Levuka, Ovalau Island, Fiji, from the water. The buildings along the waterfront are in a European style with verandahs and two stories made of wood. Behind the row of buildings are residential houses, also in European styles. The buildings on the waterfront include the Clifton Hotel, Furniture Warehouse, and Dispensary. Levuka was an important trading town and the initial seat of the early Colonial Government.

The photograph is captioned 'Settlement. Levuka'.

Dr Coppinger records in his account that HMS Alert arrived here on 18 September and departed for Suva on 11 October 1880.
