Letter written by Frederick Jennings Thomas from HMS ANTELOPE to his father Sir John Thomas.

Letter written by Thomas from HMS ANTELOPE at Cadiz Harbour to his father Sir John Thomas. In the first page of the letter, dated 3 March 1810, he gives an account of the voyage from Spithead to Cadiz, and describes Cadiz as ‘the seat of warfare’, under continuous attack from French forces, writing ‘Monsieur Francois is hard at work all around us – and most persevering and indefatigable is he in his exertions….’. The second page of letter takes the form of a journal with entries for 9, 11, 12 and 14 March. On 9 March he writes that a ‘hurricane’ struck Cadiz Bay on 5 March causing several Spanish and Portuguese to be driven ashore where they were destroyed by the French forces. He opines that Cadiz will fall unless more British ships are troops are sent out to defend it. On 14 March he writes that the ANTELOPE is returning to England.
