Administrative / biographical background
Arthur Bilbrough (1840-1925) was a shipowner and insurance broker who began his career as an apprentice with Pilkington & Wilson in Liverpool. His partnership in London was renamed A. Bilbrough & Co in 1879 and he was elected a member of Lloyd's in 1883. The firm gained significance in managing mutual shipping insurance schemes, including the Empire Insurance Club and Empire Steamship War Risks Assurance Association. In 1890 it took over management of the mutual protection and indemnity associations that had been established by Sir George E. Hodgkinson & Son. These later became The London Steam Ship Owners' Mutual Insurance Association Ltd, now known as The London P&I Club.
