Journal kept by George Frederick Cottam as mate on the steam gun vessel HMS MOHAWK, 16 September 1856 to 6 November 1856; on the steam corvette HMS SATELLITE, 7 November 1856 to 22 April 1857; HMS MONARCH, 22 April 1857 to 26 January 1858; and HMS GANGES, flagship of Rear-Admiral R.L. Baynes, 27 January 1858 to 1 May 1861. The volume contains some sketches, watercolour illustrations, newspaper cuttings and pictures of Cottam.
